2008

On July 31, 2008, Dr.
Fan received a 3-year research grant from the Army Research Office (ARO)
that is entitle with "Multiple Domain Particle Filters with
Dual-Band Sensing for Multi-Contextual Tracking and Recognition".
This is a collaborative project led by Dr. Joseph Havlicek (PI) and
Dr. Guoliang Fan (Co-PI).

On July
7th, 2008, Yi's paper that is entitled with "Multi-channel
Segmental Hidden Markov Models for Sports Video Mining" is accepted
by the ACM Multimedia Conference 2008 that will be held in
Vancouver, BC, Canada, Oct. 27-Nov. 1, 2008.
-
On June 29,
2008, the VCIPL has two papers accepted by the 19th
International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR2008) that
are Tina's paper on multi-view face recognition and Xin's paper on
video-based gait tracking and estimation. Especially, Xin's paper is
accepted as an oral presentation. Congratulations to Tina and Xin!

On May 27,
2008, Cheng Chen has received
the Summer Graduate Fellowship from the Graduate College that
provides additional support to Cheng for his research and his trip
to CVPR08 in summer. Congratulations to Cheng!

On April
15, 2008, Vijay and Frank's paper entitled with "Integrated
Target Tracking and Recognition using Joint Appearance-Motion
Generative Models" is accepted by the 5th Joint IEEE
International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in
and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS08).

On April
10, 2008, Dr. Fan visited
Virginia
Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (WMASC) at Old
Dominion University (ODU). He served as a judge for the VMASC
Student Capstone Conference. He was also invited to give a talk in
the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at ODU on
April 11.

On April
10, 2008, two VCIPL members received special recognitions in the
annual IEEE-OSU meeting. Vijay received a special Ph.D. scholarship
and Dr. Fan received the Outstanding Professor Award.
-
On April 9,
2008, Dr. Fan visited the Army Research Lab (ARL) Adelphi,
MD, and gave a talk on target tracking and recognition in Dr.
Nasser M. Nasrabadi's research group.
-
On March
17, 2008, John and Davis, two undergraduate researchers in VCIPL,
have received that the
Wentz
Project Award that will support them to do research in VCIPL for
2008-2009 under Dr. Fan's supervision. Only three ECEN undergraduate
students have received this award, and two of them are from VCIPL.
Congratulations to both of them!

On March 7,
2008, Cheng's paper entitled with "Hybrid Body
Representation for Integrated Pose Recognition, Localization and
Segmentation" is accepted by
the
2008 IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern
Recognition (CVPR2008). Congratulations to Cheng!

On Feb. 28,
2008, Cheng passed his Ph.D. qualify exam that is a critical
step for a Ph.D. student. The committee members have highly
complimented his research. Congratulations to him!

-
On Nov. 20,
2007, the VCIPL web server launched the website of the 5th Joint IEEE
International Workshop on Objective Tracking and Classification in
and Beyond the Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS08).
Dr. Fan is the co-chair of OTCBVS08 that will be held in conjunction with
CVPR2008
in Anchorage, AK, June 2008.

On Nov. 2,
2007, Dr. Lijie Liu visited the VCIPL and gave an interesting talk on his
research in the Friday group meeting. As the first VCIPL graduate, Lijie received his M.S. degree from
OSU under Dr. Fan's supervision in summer 2003. He recently defended
his Ph.D. dissertation at Johns Hopkins University (picture
of Drs. Fan and Liu).

On Oct. 23,
2007, Dr. Fan received a travel grant from Oklahoma NASA EPSCoR.
This grant will support Dr. Fan to visit
NASA
Ames Research Center where he will meet with NASA scientists to
discuss possible research collaboration in the area of vision-based
approaches for safety monitoring.

On July 24,
2007, Xiaomu's paper entitled with "Selecting Salient
Frames for Spatiotemporal Video Segmentation" is accepted
as a regular paper by IEEE Trans. on Image Processing. This paper is
developed from one chapter in his Ph.D. dissertation. Congratulations to
Xiaomu!

On July 1,
2007, Dr. Fan is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure by
OSU Board of Regents. Thank all VCIPL members both current and past for their hard work in the past six years.

From June
18-22, 2007, Dr. Fan led the VCIPL team to attend the CVPR2007
conference in Minneapolis, MN, where the VCIPL members presented
four papers in three workshops. Particularly, the past two VCIPL
Ph.D. graduates, Xiaomu and Thitiporn, also attended the conference.

On May 14,
2007, Dr. Fan received a REU (Research Experience for
Undergraduates) supplement grant from the National Science
Foundation (NSF) that will support two undergraduate students, Andy
Hammett and Stephen Nilson, to
work at the VCIPL in summer and fall 2007.
-
In April,
2007, there are six conference papers that have been accepted for
publication in the major IEEE conferences and workshops. Yi's two
papers on video mining have been accepted for publication by ICME07
(International
Conference on Multimedia and Expo) and SLAM07 (Semantic
Learning Applications in Multimedia). Frank's paper on image
segmentation will be presented in ICIP07 (International
Conference on Image Processing). Vijay and Frank have two papers
on target tracking to be presented in OTCBVS07 (Object
Tracking and Classification in and Beyond Visible Spectrum).
Thitiporn also has one paper accepted for publication in BMG07 (Beyond
Multiview Geometry). SLAM07, OTCBVS07, and BMG07 are workshops
to be held in conjunction with CVPR07 in June. Congratulations to
all them!

On Feb. 12,
2007, Ms. Shan (Sandra) Jiang joined the VCIPL as a Visiting Scholar.
Sandra is an associate professor at the
China
University of Petroleum, Beijing, China, and she will spend
half-year at OSU working in the area of face recognition. Welcome
her to the VCIPL!

On Jan. 19,
2007, Jason and Charlie joined the VCIPL as the M.S. graduate
students to work on their M.S thesis related to 3D medical imaging
and visualization. Welcome both of them!

On Jan. 4,
2007, the VCIPL web server launched the website of 4th Joint IEEE

From Dec.
10-13, 2006, Dr. Fan and Yi attended
IEEE
Multimedia Symposium on Multimedia in San Diego, CA. Yi did an
oral presentation on his recent research that is entitled with
"Camera View-based American Football Video Analysis".

On Dec. 1,
2006, Tom passed his Ph.D. preliminary
exam that is entitled with "3D Model Inference for Man-made
Point Clouds". He is the seven Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully
enter the second stage of Ph.D. study.
-
On Nov. 20,
2006, Chunna (Tina) Tian joined the VCIPL as a visiting Ph.D. student
from Xidian University, China. As the first
student in a joint Ph.D. training program between OSU and Xidian, she will spend one year
at OSU working in the area of face detection and recognition. Welcome
her to the VCIPL!

From Nov.
6-9, 2006, Dr. Fan led three Ph.D. students, Thitiporn, Xin, and
Cheng, to the second International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC)
held in Lake Tahoe, NV. Cheng gave an oral presentation on human
motion segmentation. Thitiporn and Xin presented a poster on their
retinal imaging research. Some pictures can be seen from
here.

On Oct. 23, 2006,
Vijay has passed his Ph.D. preliminary
exam that is entitled with "Integrated Target Tracking and
Recognition using Particle Filters". He is the sixth Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully
enter the second stage of Ph.D. study.
-
On Oct. 6, 2006,
Xin has passed her Ph.D. preliminary
exam that is entitled with "Statistical Modeling and Learning
Approaches for Social Activity Analysis in Visual Surveillance".
Currently, she is the fifth Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully
enter the second stage of Ph.D. study.

On Oct. 4,
2006, the lab is re-named to the "Visual Computing
and Image Processing Lab", and the abbreviation is
still "VCIPL". The new name is meant to
better reflect the mission and the research focuses of this lab.
-
On Sept.
27, 2006, Yi has passed his Ph.D. preliminary
exam that is entitled with "Generative Models for Video Mining".
Currently, he is the fourth Ph.D. student in VCIPL to successfully
enter the second stage of Ph.D. study.
-
On June 29,
2006, Anne successfully defended her M.S. thesis. and she is the
fifth M.S. (thesis option) student in VCIPL. Congratulations to her!
-
On June 8,
2006, Thitiporn passed her Ph.D. qualify exam that is a critical
step for a Ph.D. student. Congratulations to her! She is expected to
take the final defense by the end of 2006.

On May 19,
2006, two VCIPL undergraduate students, Bryan and Colby are
listed on the
President's
Honor Roll. Only full-time undergraduate students who completed
12 or more hours with a grade point average of 4.00 and with no
incomplete grade, were placed on the President Honor Roll. Congratulations
to both of them!

On May 15,
2006, three new members joined in the VCIPL, Dr. Xin Fan
(Post-doc), Matt Watt (M.S. student), and Mike Fergades (REU
student). Welcome all of them!

On May 1,
2006, Dr. Fan received Halliburton Outstanding Young
Faculty Award from the College of Engineering at OSU. The
Halliburton Young Faculty Award is provided annually to recognize
outstanding overall performance for young Engineering faculty.
-
On April
21, 2006, Colby presents his Wentz project in the annual
conference at OSU. His research is regarding data fusion for 3D
visualization (picture), and Dr. Fan
is his mentor on this project (picture).
-
On April
20, 2006, Dr. Fan received a REU (Research Experience for

On March
22, 2006, the VCIPL has been moved to ATRC233 in the Advanced
Technology Research Center. The new lab facility has 600 square foot
with a nice view to

On March
21, 2006, Xiaomu Song, who is the first Ph.D. from the VCIPL and
currently a Post-doc in Northwestern University, has his third
journal manuscripts accepted by IEEE Trans. on Circuits and
Systems for Video Technology. Congratulations to him!

On Feb. 7,
2006, Drs. Fan and Yen were invited to visit the
Image
Science and Machine Vision Group,
Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. Drs. Fan and Yen presented a
technical seminar titled "Advanced Retinal Imaging for Diabetic
Retinopathy", which reviewed their recent collaborative work
in non-invasive evaluation of diabetic
retinopathy by applying advanced retinal imaging approaches.

On Dec. 5
and 7, 2005, Thitiporn and Vijay presented their research papers
at International Symposium on Visual
Computing, Lake Tahoe, NV.

On Nov. 1,
2005, Dr. Fan was invited by
Prof.
Tiange Zhuang to visit the Department of Biomedical Engineering
at Shanghai Jiaotong University,
and he gave a talk on "Advanced Retinal Imaging for Non-invasice
Disease Study".
-
On Oct. 24,
2005, Dr. Fan was invited by
Prof.
Xinbo Gao, to give a talk in the Graduate School at
Xidian
University, China. The title of his presentation is "Statistical
Mixture Modeling for Object-based Video Segmentation"
(See some pictures from Album). It has been nine year since he
graduated from Xidian University with the M.S. degree in 1996.

On Aug. 22,
2005, Yi Ding joined in the VCIPL as a Ph.D. student. He will be
working in the field on content-based video analysis. Welcome him!

On July
14/15,
2005, three graduate students have successfully defended their
theses. Xin and Vijay have received their M.S. degrees, and
both of them will continue on their Ph.D. studies in the VCIPL.
Xiaomu have received his Ph.D. degree, and he is the first Ph.D.
graduate in the VCIPL. Congratulations to all of them!

On June 18,
2005, Dr. Fan was elevated to an IEEE Senior Member.
He is currently affiliated with Signal Processing Society and
Circuits & Systems Society.

On
June 16, 2005, Thitiporn's first journal paper entitled with
"Hybrid Retinal Image Registration" was accepted
for publication by
IEEE
Trans. Information Technology in Medicine. Congratulations to
her!

On
March 17, 2005, Colby received OSU Wentz Project Award
fro the 2005-2006 academic year. As OSU's largest scholarship, the
Wentz Research Projects provide an opportunity for undergraduates to
design and conduct research under the supervision of a faculty
mentor.
Dr. Fan will serve as the faculty mentor. Congratulations to
Colby!

Feb. 1, 2005, Dr. Fan (Co-PI) received a Research Initiation Grant from
Oklahoma
NASA EPSCoR. This project involves multidisciplinary remote sensing and GIS
research which is jointly led by Dr. Mahesh Rao (PI) from Geography,
Dr. Johnson Thomas (Co-PI) from Computer Science, and Dr. Fan from
ECEN. The project is entitled with "Using a Multi-resolution
GIS-modeling Approach to Evaluate Carbon Sequestration Potential in
Texas County, Oklahoma".

On
Jan. 28, 2005, Dr. Fan received OSU-Big XII Faculty Fellowship
award which will support Dr. Fan to visit University of Colorado
in summer 2005 and to develop research collaboration.

In January
2005, three new members joined in the VCIPL, including Dr. Li

On Dec. 21th,
2004, Cheng passed his Ph.D. preliminary exam that is entitled with "A
Multi-layer Framework for Object-based Video Segmentation". He is the
third Ph.D. student in the VCIPL to successfully
enter the second stage of Ph.D. study.

On Dec. 8th,
2004, Xiaomu successfully passed the Ph.D. qualify exam, the major
step prior to the final defense. He is the first Ph.D. student in the
VCIPL who passed this exam. Congratulations to Xiaomu!

2004, Ginto successfully passed the M.S. defense. He is the second

2004, Dr.
Fan received a 3-year research grant from Army Research Office (ARO).
This is a collaborative project between OSU and University of Oklahoma (OU).

with "Integrated Target Detection, Tracking, Classification, and

On May 13th,
2004, Dr.
Fan received the
National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early
Career Development (CAREER) Program award. Dr. Fan's 5-year CAREER project will focus on
video understanding at both the object-level and scene-level.

Fan was awarded the Halliburton Excellent Young Teacher Award
from the College of Engineering at OSU.

On July
27, 2003, VCIPL members had a farewell party for Lijie at Dr. Fan's
home (pictures

Lijie received his M.S. degree in Summer 2003, and he is the first
graduated student at VCIPL.

On July
1st, 2003, VCIPL is expanded by adding a new
lab space at 405 Engineering South where the biomedical imaging group
(BIG) will be working on the OCAST Health Research project, see the BIG
members (picture1,
picture2).

On June 1,
2003, Drs. Johnson Thomas (PI, Computer
Science), Guoliang Fan (Co-PI), Mahesh Rao (PI, Geography) received a
research grant from OSU to build an integrated Web-GIS system for
environmental quality and resource management.

On April 20,
2003, Dr. Guoliang Fan
(PI) and
Dr. Gary
Yen (Co-PI) received a
three-year research grant from
OCAST
Health Research Program to work on Advanced Retinal Imaging for
Non-invasive Disease Study.

On Feb 1st, 2003, IEEE Signal
Processing Letters published Lijie Liu's first international journal paper
which is also the first one authored by the Graduate student at VCIPL. Congratulations
to Lijie!

On Jan. 17, 2003, Dr. Guoliang
Fan (PI) received a Research Initiation Grant from
Oklahoma
NASA EPSCoR. The project will involve a multidisciplinary research team
including Dr. Mahesh Rao (Geography) and Dr. Johnson Thomas (Computer Science).
They will develop a prototype Web-GIS decision support system for
environment quality and resource management.

On Jan. 13, 2003, Ginto Cherian (M.S. student) joined in the VCIPL as
graduate students supervised by Dr. Guoliang Fan. Welcome him to the VCIPL!

On Jan. 12, 2003, Thitiporn's
first paper was accepted for presentation at the IEEE
International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS
2003) that will be
held in Bangkok, Thailand, May 25-28, 2003. She will have her first international
conference experience in her hometown! Congratulations to her!

On Nov, 14, 2002, Thitiporn passed the Ph.D. preliminary exams with the excellent
performance. Congratulations to her!

On Oct. 16, 2002, Dr.
Guoliang Fan Dr. Mahesh Rao have received Oklahoma NASA EPSCoR Travel Grant
which will support both of them to visit
NASA
Stennis Space Center, MS, in November 2002.

On Aug. 6, 2002,
Lijie, Xiaomu, and Yan Dong presented their first papers in the
45th
IEEE International Midwest Symposium Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems
(MWSCAS), Tulsa, OK. They reported their most recent research on JPEG image coding,
Bayesian image segmentation, and document image segmentation, see
publications.

On April 22, 2002, Dr. Guoliang Fan received a grant from
Environmental
Institute's Center for Water and Energy Research program. In this project,
Dr. Fan will collaborate with
Dr.
Mahesh (Geography) on developing a GIS-based tool for Automated Feature
Information Retrieval from multisource geospatial data. The proposed project
will be extended to build an efficient decision-tool for natural resource
management and monitoring based on various geospatial data, such as satellite
imagery, elevation, slope, and soil data, etc.

On March 8, 2002, Lijie and Xiaomu attended the Research Symposium held by OSU
Graduate College. Lijie presented his research on motion-oriented video
segmentation (in front of the poster,
discuss
with attendee). Xiaomu gave a presentation on semi-supervised image
segmentation (in front of the screen,
in
process).

On Jan, 4, 2002,
Mr. Lijie Liu and Ms. Thitiporn Chanwimaluang join the VCIPL as
Ph.D. student supervised by Dr. Guoliang Fan. Welcome both of them to VCIPL
(group picture)!

On Jan. 4, 2002, VCIPL has been
moved to 402 Engineering South. There is a new look
of VCIPL.

On Nov. 2, 2001,
Dr. Guoliang Fan was awarded
NASA
EPSCoR Travel Grant which will support Dr. Fan to visit
NASA
Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, on November 28, 2001.
-
On Aug. 20, 2001, Mr. Xiaomu Song, was admitted to the Ph.D. program in
the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was also awarded
the ECEN Graduate Scholar package. Mr. Song is the first graduate student
in the VCIPL under the supervision of Dr. Fan.
-
On Aug. 20, 2001, with the generous support from
ECEN
and CEAT at
OSU,
the Visual Communication and Image Processing (VCIPL) was founded. Dr.
Fan is the Director of the VCIPL. The VCIPL is currently located in 313
Engineering North.
-
On Aug. 16, 2001, Dr. Guoliang Fan joined the School of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at Oklahoma State University as an Assistant Professor, after
he received his Ph.D.'s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University
of Delaware.
